THE Eurozone crisis sparked another plunge in the FTSE today as fears Greece could default on its debts and sink the euro intensified.

Eurozone finance ministers delayed a decision as to whether to pay the debt-stricken nation the next tranche of its 110 billion euro (£94.4 billion) bailout money, sparking further doubts that it will keep up with its debt repayments.

Officials have been warned by the International Monetary Fund that bickering could lead to global financial collapse if action is not taken soon.

The FTSE 100 Index fell 3 per cent at times slipping below 4900, extending its abysmal form after its worst quarter for nine years saw nearly 14 per cent wiped off its value.

Banks were the biggest losers as fears over the sector were heightened when Deutsche bank issued a profits warning, blaming financial market volatility and more charges on Greek government debt.

And there were rumours that Belgian lender Dexia may need to be split up after its debt rating was put under review.

Lloyds was 8 per cent lower, while Barclays and Royal Bank of Scotland were down 7 per cent.

The price of Brent crude oil also fell below 100 US dollars a barrel, reflecting growing pessimism about the global economy.

Fears of a double-dip recession are rampant as the IMF said that the global recovery was in a dangerous phase - the continued uncertainty in Greece will only add fuel to the growing problem. 

The only way out for Greece & that's to leave the EU & start using their natural currency, but what about the debt I hear you cry? Well, my response would be directed at the 'people' that are powerful enough to lend countries money, of which is seemingly created out of thin air & paid back with interest! We all have to ask ourselves who are these mysterious people, & what are they doing to alleviate the dire financial situation?   And there we have it, these world bankers have been holding the world to ransom for decades, hiding in the shadows, never mentioned in the mainstream news, so why do our governments do nothing about this globally corrupt organisation? That friends, is a question we should all be asking.

DAVID Cameron was given a clear signal of the strength of Tory anger towards Brussels yesterday when activists packed a meeting on the European Union.

More than 200 grassroots Tories, MPs and members of the public crowded into the gathering organised by the Daily Express and the TaxPayers’ Alliance on the theme “We need to talk about Europe”.

Speakers made clear the case for a national referendum on whether Britain should quit the EU and urged the Tory leadership to recognise the growing public disquiet at the spiralling cost and lack of democracy in Brussels.

Tory MP Douglas Carswell, Daily Express chief political commentator Pat­rick O’Flynn and Tim Montgomerie, editor of the ConservativeHome website, all addressed the meeting.

It was part of the Daily Express’s crusade for British withdrawal from the EU, which was chaired by TaxPayers’ Alliance chief executive Matthew Elliott.

In a hard-hitting speech at Manchester’s Bridgewater Hall, Clacton MP Mr Carswell said: “Is it right that the political elite and mandarins in Whitehall make decisions of profound significance for the rest of us?”

He described the question of Britain’s EU membership as a “textbook case” for a ballot, adding: “It is not something that can be determined at a general election. It’s a major constitutional question.

“How can it be right that we have a referendum to decide on the electoral system by which MPs are elected and yet not have a referendum to decide from where the country is actually governed?”

Mr Carswell said the EU had “damaged politics” and left Britain to be ruled by “the greatest quango of the lot, the European Commission”.

Mr O’Flynn, who pointed out that David Cameron had attempted to silence Tory opposition to Brussels by ordering the party not to “bang on” about Europe, described the fringe meeting as “an unashamed hour of banging on, with no apologies”.

“And what a lot there is to bang on about,” he added, pointing to the colossal euro zone bailouts, the higher contributions to Brussels coffers, the expanding EU budget, the destruction of jobs through over-regulation and rampant welfare tourism.

He pointed out that senior Tory Michael Portillo had promised to “stop the rot from Brussels” 25 years ago. “We never did stop the rot from Brussels,” he said. “All we got was more and more of it.”

Mr O’Flynn told the meeting: “Nearly a year ago the Daily Express took the decision to become the first ­national newspaper to declare openly that Britain would be better off out of the EU.

“It became increasingly obvious that the economics didn’t add up any more and the loss of sovereignty was no longer a price worth paying.

“When we informed the readers of our decision we were overwhelmed. We saw 370,000 signatures on a petition we handed in to Downing Street in January, with another 80,000 on our website and another 33,000 on the Downing Street website.”

Mr O’Flynn added: “Britain used to be called the sick man of Europe. Now Europe is the sick economic zone of the world and yet it can maintain a determination not only for ever deeper union but also for ever greater regulation.”

Mr Montgomerie, whose website is widely read by Tory activists and supporters, praised the Daily Express for raising the issue of Britain’s EU membership and the TaxPayers’ Alliance for standing up for hard-pressed families.

First bananas were too bendy, then apples were too red.

But now meddling Eurocrats are threatening an even more integral part of our British heritage – Greenwich Mean Time.

A group of scientists from the International Bureau of Weights and Measures (BIPM), based near Paris, want to axe the last vestiges of the Greenwich Mean Time system, under which day-length is based on the rotation of the earth.

Under the new proposals, which have been rejected by the British Government, the scientists argue that day-length should be based solely on atomic clocks, which differ slightly from astronomical time. Since 1972, standard international time has combined both.

But the new proposals would mean Britain’s role in global timekeeping would finally be relegated to a footnote in history, with the BIPM in France effectively taking charge. Dr Elisa Felicitas Arias, of the BIPM, said: “We want to de-couple the world’s timekeeping from its link to the rotation of the Earth.

“It would mean an end to GMT, but it would create a global time-keeping system for the 21st century.”

She added: “Britain has lodged the main objections, but they are based on tradition, not science. It is very ironic since it was Britain that actually invented the atomic clock. But we need a modern system for time-keeping and GMT will become mainly historical.”

The proposals will be put to a meeting of scientists at the Royal Society next month.

But last night the Government and interested parties in the UK angrily rejected the proposals from across the Channel.

David Rooney, former curator of timekeeping at the Royal Greenwich Observatory and now at the Science Museum, said: “GMT has a lot of cultural resonance, but if this is approved it will effectively disappear – and there is no need for such a change.”

Mr Rooney added that the current system was a proven one which had worked for decades.

Rejecting the plans, Science Minister David Willets said: “This is primarily a finely-balanced scientific argument.

“But I do detect undercurrents of nationalism. Britain’s position is that we should stick to real time as experienced by humans, which is based on the Earth’s rotation, not atomic clocks.”

Under the alternative proposed system, he said, we would lose contact with the reality of Earth’s rotation.

This could mean that, “eventually our midnight would happen at noon”.

Rules and other imposed changes handed down from our European neighbours have sparked controversy on numerous occasions in the past.

Most famously, Brussels bureaucrats stunned the British public when they established strict guidelines over the appearance of fruit and vegetables.

These included cucumbers not being too bendy, bananas not too mis-shapen, carrots not too wide and apples not too red.

Around 26 of the EU’s 36 directives were later abolished, although minimum standards remain on goods including apples, lettuces and peaches.

MORE than two thirds of Tory voters want Britain to quit the European Union immediately, a poll revealed last night.

A massive 68 per cent of people who backed the Conservatives at the 2010 General Election would vote to break ties with Brussels if a referendum on the issue was held tomorrow.

Nearly three out of four Tory voters want the Government to organise a national referendum on the UK’s EU membership as soon as possible. And 62 per cent of all voters believe the time is right for an EU referendum.

The poll findings – released as the Conservative Party Conference opened in Manchester – confirmed the intense pressure David Cameron faces over European policy from the Tory grassroots.

The research was carried out by leading opinion poll firm YouGov for the Vote UK out of EU Campaign, which wants a referendum to be held as the first step towards a British exit.

Jon Gaunt, chief executive of the Vote UK out of EU Campaign, said: “Cameron should now do the honourable thing and give the British people their democratic right.” According to the research, 50 per cent of voters thought Britain’s membership of the EU and its predecessors – the Common Market, EEC and European Community – had been “totally negative” for the UK.

In contrast, just 29 per cent thought is had been “totally positive”. YouGov quizzed 2,754 in an internet poll last week.

Laurence Janta-Lipinski, senior political researcher with YouGov, said: “The results clearly show that the nation wants its voice heard on membership of the EU.

“A majority of Tory, Labour and Lib Dem voters believe their party should call for a referendum.”

And laughably Mr Cameron still insists that the British people don't want a referendum, come on Dave you can't honestly believe that! Your a fool if you think the British public will be fobbed off by this kind of desperate rhetoric.

THE Daily Express crusade for Britain to quit the European Union scored a huge victory yesterday when MPs agreed to hold an historic debate on the issue.

It means Parliament will vote on whether there should be a referendum on Britain’s continued membership of the EU.

And pressure intensified on David Cameron over Europe last night when an opinion poll showed that a massive 62 per cent of voters believe the time is right for an EU referendum.

The survey, by pollsters YouGov for the Vote UK Out Of EU Campaign, also found that a majority of voters (51 per cent) would vote Yes to Britain cutting ties with Brussels for good.

MPs last night praised the Daily Express crusade for ensuring public fury over the spiralling cost and meddling of the EU could no longer be ignored by Westminster.

Tory backbencher Peter Bone said: “The key reason we are going to have this debate is because of the hundreds of thousands of people who have supported the Daily Express’s petition. Well done to the Daily Express for campaigning so hard on this issue.” And fellow Tory backbencher Douglas Carswell said: “It is thanks to the Daily Express highlighting this issue and spearheading the campaign that this debate is being held.

“The European Union is a mess. We have got to let the people decide whether we stay in or leave.”

The Parliamentary debate, which will be held before Christmas, is being organised by the Commons Backbench Business Committee in response to a series of petitions on the issue, particularly the Daily Express’s 373,000-name petition calling for Britain to quit the EU.

And more than 33,000 people have backed a petition, organised by the Daily Express, on the official Government website calling for a national referendum on the issue. It could give the country its first chance to have a say on UK links with Brussels since the 1975 referendum confirming Britain’s membership of the Common Market.

Mr Bone, who is a member of the Backbench Business Committee, said: “MPs must be given a free vote and there should be no whipping by the Prime Minister or other the party leaders. This is a huge international issue and MPs must be able to speak out freely.”

Ministerial sources yesterday claimed that the vote would not be binding on the Government.

But a committee source said: “That is nonsense. This vote would be Parliament speaking and Parliament is sovereign. This vote cannot be ignored.”

And the YouGov poll yesterday made clear the strength of public feeling over Britain’s EU membership. The poll found that 68 per cent of those who voted Tory at the last election want Britain to leave the EU.

And 74 per cent of Tory voters want a referendum on Britain’s membership of Europe. It found that 50 per cent believe EU membership has been “totally negative” for Britain and 65 per cent are “totally opposed” to Britain’s involvement in any further eurozone bailouts.

The groundswell of Tories behind the referendum campaign yesterday sent a stark message to David Cameron on the first day of the Conservative Conference in Manchester.

And more Tories are due to speak out on the issue today at a conference fringe meeting organised by the Daily Express and the TaxPayers’ Alliance.

Senior Tory MPs and anti-EU campaigners will feature at the public meeting on “We Need To Talk About Europe” at the city’s Bridgewater Hall. But Mr Cameron attempted to brush aside the issue yesterday by insisting most people in Britain wanted the country to stay in the EU.

He said on BBC1’s Andrew Marr Show: “It’s not our view that there should be an in/out referendum. I don’t want Britain to leave the EU. I think it’s the wrong answer for Britain. What most people want in this country is not actually to leave the EU, but to reform the EU and make sure that the balance of powers between a country like Britain and Europe is better.”

Mr Cameron said that he wanted to use future treaties to negotiate the return of powers from Brussels to Westminster.

But he said that this was an ambition “for the longer term” and there was no immediate prospect of treaty changes to make it possible. It did not form part of the current renegotiation of treaties which will keep Britain out of the eurozone bail-out mechanism, he said.

Backbench committee chairman Natascha Engel, a Labour MP, said: “Given the crisis in the eurozone, this issue has become more relevant than ever. There is a clear majority of backbench MPs who want to debate this and we have to respond to that.

“The EU today is completely different from the one the British people voted to join in 1975. It is time to examine the position again.”

Mr Cameron enraged Euro-sceptics by claiming that “most people” in Britain did not want the country to quit the EU.

In his interview on the Andrew Marr Show, the Prime Minister claimed that an EU referendum was the “wrong answer for Britain,” adding: “What most people want in this country, I believe, is not actually to leave the European Union, but to reform the European Union and make sure the balance of powers between a country like Britain and Europe is better.”

But UK Independence Party leader Nigel Farage said of Mr Cameron: “He says he believes most people do not want to leave the EU but to reform it.

“How can he possibly know that without asking the great British public?”

He went on: “On the issue of the EU it is clear that the Prime Minister is no more than a confidence trickster.”

These comments have let down hundreds of thousands of Tory voters who gave him their support as they thought he would be tough on this issue.
