JACQUES SANTER, who quit as head of the European Commission in a corruption scandal, was yesterday put in charge of raising cash to shore up the Euro.
Mr Santer, 74, will oversee the £370billion European Stability Mechanism fund. In 1999 the former premier of Luxembourg led all the EU commissioners in resigning amid claims of financial malpractice.
Martin Callanan, leader of the Tory Euro MPs, said the appointment was “like putting Dracula in charge of the blood bank”.
