BRITAIN faces an £8billion bill to meet an EU drive on recycling, a report warned yesterday.
It says waste management needs to be improved to avoid tens of millions in fines under the 2020 EU Landfill Directive for burying too much waste.
The report by the Associate Parliamentary Sustainable Resource Group calls for investment in infrastructure to avert “crippling” taxes to pay for landfill and to build facilities that turn waste into power.
Despite planned rises in Landfill Tax, a quarter of all waste valued at £70billion will still end up in landfill, the body said. It warned of a “real crisis” in capacity to deal with waste unless barriers to investment like spending cuts and bank lending were overcome.
Shadow environment minister Jamie Reed said: “More infrastructure is needed to deal with waste, not only so we can use this valuable source of energy but also so we avoid paying millions in EU fines.”

Those of you not familiar with agenda 21 (link below) should look it up, as it would seem this is another prime example of it's policies costing us more money.
