THERE was outrage last night over moves to raise Britain’s annual EU bill by £303million to almost £17billion.
The huge payment – more than £550 per household – follows a two per cent rise in the EU annual budget agreed in Brussels at the weekend, taking the total to £110billion.
In the face of widespread public anger, Eurocrats retreated from their initial demand for five per cent. But despite the deal, EU budget chief Janusz Lewandowski warned of “a serious risk” the commission would run out of funds.
MPs were critical.
Labour’s Kate Hoey said: “What a ridiculous organisation the EU is, when governments are cutting back it is asking for more money. It is time to stand up to the EU and say no.”
Tory Douglas Carswell said: “There are plenty of public servants in my constituency who would love a two per cent rise but are facing a pay freeze.”
